Can You Keep Receiving a Chinese Pension After Becoming a Foreign Citizen? Life Certification Through the China Consular App
Can you still receive a pension after acquiring foreign nationality?
People who have lawfully retired and receive a Chinese pension can, in principle, continue to receive it even if they later acquire foreign nationality and cancel their Chinese hukou and ID card — as long as they complete the annual life (eligibility) certification as required.
How to certify after your ID card is cancelled
The China Consular app (中国领事APP) serves Chinese citizens, but its pension eligibility certification function allows another person (such as a child or relative) to register an account with their own Chinese identity and fill in the retiree’s information on the retiree’s behalf. The retiree does not have to log in with their own account.
Information to prepare
- The retiree’s former Chinese ID card number
- The retiree’s current nationality
- The place where the pension was originally paid
- The Chinese embassy or consulate through which certification will be handled
Two reminders
First, the information must be true. Using someone else’s identity or fabricating proof of life for pension certification may constitute insurance fraud; report the retiree’s real circumstances truthfully. Second, requirements for certification documents may differ between regions and pension agencies, so call the social insurance agency where the pension is paid to confirm before certifying.
